Exercises

Part 2 of 2 part series – Here’s Part 1

Last week we looked at the challenges of working long hours at the desk and the physically and mentally endurance needed for effective performance.

In answering the Question from part 1, How can you become a more productive and creative force behind the your desk, the answer is simply to Workout! Get your mind and body in a peak performance state. In particular we want to work on;

  1. maintaining proper breathing
  2. maintaining Energy levels
  3. maintaining your Concentration

Exercise makes you smart

Exercise will boost your productive, creativity concentration, ability to learn and enhance your self esteem, that’s why the desk worker keeps their body Olympic fit, By the way I lied, exercise does not make you smart, but it does put you in a fantastically better position for cognitive processing (that sounds so smart doesn’t it – cognitive processing,) John Medina the author of brain rules, says exercise is like fertiliser for the mind, it optimises the brain for learning and cognition (Thinking).

Training for the desk Olympics

I hand picked three exercises Yoga, Juggling and Jogging to help fertilise and condition your mind body to work more comfortably and effectively behind your desk. NB. if you can’t juggle yet don’t worry the process of learning is just as important and helpful if not more so then knowing how juggle.

I had chosen these three exercises because I’ve had great success with them Over the years, I’ve become an evangelist, and I want to spread the good word to my fellow desk Olympians, so you can synergically benefits from these exercise’s

Step one Upping your Energy levels, increase stamina and Sharpens your Concentration

Yoga is a moving Meditation. Which promotes cultivation of concentration that can be applied to long periods of work particularly work that involves a steady creative flow, yoga helps to create the physical mental conditions necessary for Olympic productivity. The Application of some will power Established to a routine of daily cultivation will pay an desk Olympian you infinite returns.

Step two Running / jogging  ups your Energy levels and sharpen your Concentration. Jogging/running develops strength and endurance  it’s a great full body workout. Joggling increases your Energy levels and Optimises the brain for peak performance and learning.

Step 3 Sharpen your Concentration Juggling

Juggling because it is a hole brain exercise (simulate the left and right hemispheres)

The synergic impact of juggling to the untrained eye are some what unseen and Or mysterious, but science and many practiced student have Become aware off the following effects so here’s some of the benefits of juggling

Have you heard the saying you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, well I like to
say that you can give an old dog a new brain…  For years the mainstream, the scientific establishment considered the Neurons that make up your brain to be a fixed system, in capable of regeneration. so once you enter into adulthood that’s it for you buddy your stuck with the same brain for life, Well they were Wrong, this idea has been buried.

You don’t have to make do with the brain you have now, yes you can build yourself a new one. You’ve already been introduce to the world of synergism, now your ready to be initiated further along the golden path of conscious growth.

Buzan Brain Principle number one synergism

I was first introduced to synergism when I read a book by Tony Buzan called,
Head strong Buzan explained that in a synergetic system like the human brain 1 + 1 does not necessarily equal 2. In synergic system of the brain 1 plus 1 has infinite potential, Tony called this brain? Principle number one. I could not believe what I was reading, I was absolutely amazed, this meant that every thing that enters your head has the potential to multiply.

What doe’s this mean for you?

This means that unlike a computer, the human brain, your brain is capable of creatively Manipulating information or input infinitely to get new out puts, you have creative power that is potentially limitless.

Note: The only limit on this power is your willingness or desire to use it and the quality of the input/food you put in your head.

Ok it’s show time

Here’s what happens when you stimulate your neurons into a state of electro boogie (activity) The process of learning, this maybe by playing a challenging game, reading a stimulating book or learning to play a song on a musical instrument, the neurons in your brain fire Like mad, it’s like there’s an electrical storm brewing in your head. As this bio Electrical storm takes place in your dome, your brain structure or neural pathway literally Begins to change, as your brain makes more mental connections, the lights come on and you get ah hah moment.

Keep on keeping on – time and work hardwire your new brain

(Over the course of time continued stimulation kicks of the process of Neurogenesis, your brain wont be the same, this does not matter what your goal is, in a Few months you can re modal your brain and reinvent yourself. This is the truth behind all personal development and learning. That’s why your conditioning and philosophy are so impotent for sustained grow and change, your philosophy will keep you keeping on Track with your goal when you feel like your not making progress.

So what’s Neurogenesis you maybe asking

Neurogenesis is the birth of new neurons) or the process by which neurons are generated. In order for you to develop new abilities and skills we need to stimulate the brain to either grow new neurons, make new connection or activate unused brain centres, to trigger the activation these Centres we need a catalyst or stimuli. Personally my favourite stimuli are:

  • Debating or reasoning as they say in Jamaica
  • Observing the environment
  • Reading rich books (rich in learning’s)
  • Juggling
  • Rapping free styling
  • Playing guitar
  • Meditation… (Meditation a funny one because it comes in active and passive forms.

Neurogenesis… Giving an old dog a new brain

What you do physically changes you mentally through the process of Neurogenesis – in order to grow smarter you’re going to be looking for skills which are transferable.

Two  Points two remember  about your Brain

  • In the same way information or input can synergicaly trigger new thoughts and ideas?
  • Physical activities and hobbies can synergicaly develop new mental abilities, talents and skills.

These are very powerful statement, think about it… Physical activities or hobbies can be used to Develop and restructure your brain… all you need to do is decide what skills and abilities you want to develop and then find activities, games or hobbies that will help develop the traits involved, the point is to use your hobbies or activities to develop transferable skills, talents…. a good way to look at it is to make you work your play and when play times over you will of found that you have a new ability.

What  games to make you smarter

  • Your activities can be Catalyst for Neurogenesis
  • Its takes a bit of time to hard wire new mental pathways -
  • A good example of a Catalyst is Chess, chess is a fun game, well for some it is, I hated it
until I found out that about synergism and neruo genesis, anyway chess is a game of strategy, memory concentration and logic at the time my brain felt blunt, I found playing chess a useful sharpener, in the began I was always getting my ass kick by friends and robots, but in time Neurogenesis kicked in and the force was with me, Like Luke sky walker, I became an worthy opponent. Remember it’s not about playing to win, it’s about playing to grow, just have fun, a bunch of pumped up neurons will be the fruit of your labour.

So what was harvest of this labour?

The product was a boost my concentration, logic and strategical planning skills. – Its not like going to Cambridge University… but those transferable skills are useful in many areas life business or academic pursuits. Think about how you can use games to pimp your brain – Theirs games like cash flow quaderant from… rich dad poor dad that help you to develop financial literacy etc.

For anybody interested in personal growth this mind body or brain body Principle has far reaching implications, for growth. On a personal note I have used these principles toTransform my self into a fluent reader and a competent writer, I had taught Myself something that schools had failed to teach me – which was how to read and Write – this is the power of synergism tactical thinking, a little time and will power.

    3 Awesome Questions

    • What games can you use to bring you closer to your goals
    • What abilities or skill would I like to development?
    • What activities or games instruments can I use to help me?

    Remember

The effects of synergism can be observed in just about every area of human Activity, all things are inter connected, every thing influence every thing else. I learnt this from one of my first coaches and mentors but more about the Rasta sage in the next visit.

    Happy Neurogenesis
