Routine or Ritual part 1

As readers of mpd space.com already know I’m passionate about unlocking and codifying the process of conscious self growth and self transformation, in some cases this means a total life style u-turn, in other case’s a change in philosophy is needed. A life style U-turn may demands or involve that you to reinvent your self (character) to match the requirements of the challenges you face or the goals you are aspiring to achieve. In both cases an adjustment to your self image is needed, this is done by Re-Training or conditioning the mind with new thoughts beliefs and habits.

Over the last couple of months – I’ve been focused on two of the components that are necessary to fulfil your commitments and goals, both – lofty and mundane. The components are, Conditioning / Re-training the mind, body emotions with supportive philosophies, habits) and the self discipline needed to carry out your plans.

Their’s more to planing then just Doing

Now this Religious obsession of conscious self growth and Self Transformation has been Centred on the practical aspects of Conditioning you mind for enhanced success, I call them the doing! The do this, do that type of thing, you know meditate, workout, write plans, action plans, review results and plans etc, all of which is very important, but only looking at the Doing (practical) aspects of taking charge of your psychology, behaviour is all very left brained and Analytical, it only addresses one half of the reality which is you, lets call it the Side view – which looks at the doing aspect that at first glimpse seems linear.

Off course there’s more to the story, other then the side view, there are to more views that make up the trinity of the being that is you as seen from the perspective of the drawing board, The Bird’s eye view, and The First person view.

The Bird’s eye view

If I were to take a aerial recording of my life or any ones life for that matter over the course of a year or even a mouth it would be immediately obvious that my actions held to together by the force of routine’s, I, like all people have a whole Army of routines and sub routine, that make up the pattern’s of our daily life, I like to think of them as little rituals – The Birds eye view!

First person view or Senior perspective

The first person view looks at the perspective of the here and now, the perspective of the moment, the first person view addresses your relationship to the moment, environment and your sense, when we look at the first person perspective, we look at comfort and mood, its of great value to address those aspects when conditioning or integrating new habits and activities into a regular routine.

The challenge of working from home

For home workers we may often find it challenging, to not only get work started, let alone build routine. First person perspective has some major advantages when it comes to re-training and conditioning new patterns and routine.

For example using your sense of smell can unlock new dimensions of memory and associations, that will be triggered whenever you use a particular scent, technically this can be a powerful alley, when developing a new routine.

Routine is the magic word here – From working for your boss to working from home in your home office can be a tough transition, and to make matters worst it can be frustratingly difficult to establish a routine, this can be experienced as procrastination, distraction, mental blocks, or even plane and simple detachment from the task at hand. Whatever it is there’s a conflict and lack of connection and attention, it all seemed so easy on paper, but now the task is at hand you get your mind in gear, there’s a huge mental chasm between where you are now in you thoughts to where you should be to get your work started let alone done. You have no boss there cracking a wipe on your back or dangling a carrot in your face to keep you productive and focused.

Pleasing your nose and your heart

Using the associative power of sent can act as a sliver cord conditioning and connecting your mind and emotions to you routine, this new ritual of scenting your room or work area strengthen your home worker identity, boosting your productivity.

Swiching from chill mode to work mode

A major challenge when working from home is switching from your regular house hold mode, to work mode – Problem is your house hold identity rules, and it has a set of well establish habits and routine. Your home identity is very comfortable it establish routine and sub routines that are both enjoyable and simulating, for some it maybe playing guitar, watching movies or some other activities or any urge that may pop into your mind when you have a laps of attention or concentration in the time you set aside for work. It’s easy enough to schedule a to do list and a plan, but to carry it out to the letter can both feel mechanical and artificial. Maintaining focused or over coming your urges and impulse are some of the great challenges when working from home.

Live your work, make it a ritual

Transforming your scheduled work time into a ritual is a perfect way to stealthily insert a new routine or working pattern.

The power of your sense ok so you want to make your routine mentally sticky, use the power of association to your advantage the use of the senses can be a powerful aid to ground your new habits in to a routine smell taste, feeling/emotion.

The classical ritual consist of singing dancing, and music, and the ritual sacrifice but I’m not going there, (save it for another article) we wont be dancing around camp fire’s or singing mantras and speaking in tongues.

What we are going to do is carry out the work we have planed in a ritualistic and religious manner.

First were going to break our old patterns and establish a new routine, to help establish and build a connection with our new routine we will use some kind of fragrance or incense, before you start work use a scent that you are fond of, burn or spray the scent before you start work. I find the vaporizer quick clean and easily to use, a lovely scent will lift the ambiance of your environment, while giving you a feel good feeling.

The next time you get to work go though the same procedure

Personally I find that pre work preparation is part and parcel of a good work session. Pre work prep – first and for most organise work area and the work to be done before hand, then I will get busy with some household tasks, vacuuming washing dishes, dusting etc, this is done in an extremely ritualistic and meditative manner.

Because those tasks are not mentally taxing, the mind can relax and arrange the details of the work to be done before hand. Sometimes this Pre – work prep may include 50 on the clip, a run around the book, yoga, breathing, having a shower or bath exercises, this Pre -work prep usual last doing 20 – 30 min worth, which includes preparing your work area.

Basically your pre work routine should be stimulating and relaxing which will lead you nicely to the main body of your ritual or should I say work! – To be continued same time, some place next week.
